Coats of Arms (Wapenschilden)

Here are some coats of arms of the Duerinck/Durinck clans, starting of course with the magnificent wall of Sint Baafskathedral in Gent, Belgium. Including the shield of DURYNCK, this dates to the 1500's (Pierre DURINCK also named Durynck, married VAN WYEMERSCH; daughter Ann Durinck married VAN POLLYNCHOVE):

From Sint Baafskathedral in Gent, and a closeup of the DURYNCK coat of arms below:

Thanks to Gilbert and Wouter Duerinck for the above images. For the full view of the wall at St. Baaf's Cathedral in Gent, Belgium, and for an explanation in Flemish, including the family tree of Pierre Durinck ("Durynck"), see Gilbert Duerinck's homepage: http://users.pandora.be/gilbert.duerinck/herald1.htm

The above coat of arms (wapen) was obtained from the Van der Meer and Duerinck families of Terneuzen and Hulst, Netherlands, respectively, whose Duerinck ancestors were from Meerdonk, Belgium in the 1740's (research ongoing). Douwe Van der Meer, Senior, who excelled at drawing and painting wapens, did this one. We will be trying to verify the authenticity of this wapens. Either way, it is a beautiful coat of arms! Please see the next image below regarding the information that was supplied with this coat of arms. Comments are requested--thank you!--Kevin

Translation: Deuring, Deurinck, Duerinck. On the shield itself, at numbers 1 and 4, blue background with one golden lion with a gold ring with 3 stones; in the hand of the lion is better shown in the first surround at numbers 2 and 3, from silver and red-purple dressed with 3 silver circles.

COATS OF ARMS (WAPENSCHILDEN):

An armory or armorial is used to look up surnames and find the coat of arms for that surname. An ordinary is used when you have a coat of arms and you need to find the surname for that coat of arms. A blazon is a verbal description of a coat of arms.

From the work of J. Th. De Raadt "Sceaux Armoiries des Pays -- Bas et des Pays -- Avoisinants" (Coats of arms from the low countries and adjacent areas), only listings for Diericx and related spelling, Diercks-Die(de)rix-Dircx. Please note that these are blazons for which Kevin does not have the coats of arms.

  1. Jan Diederijczone-1292- shield with 15 golden bezanten (Eastern golden coins) in the following order: 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. [homme du comte de Hollande 1292=man of the county or shire of Holland in 1292]
  2. Everardus, son of Theoderici, sheriff of Zaltbommel 1341- shield with indented edge and lion.
  3. Bertholdus, son of Theoderici, sheriff of Baarle-Hertog-1349- shield of black and white chequers with, in the header, three merelinnen (female blackbirds without legs or tail).
  4. Jan Diercks soen, sheriff of Rotterdam- 1366- shield with three keys (2-1) in the heart accompanied by a 5 pointed star.
  5. Jan Diedericx- former prisoner in Basweiler (Germany) under the flag of Wilre? -1374- shield with a lily.
  6. Iacop Dierickx, citizen of Gent 1439-43, receives annuity on the manor of Cruijbeke (Waasland). Shield-- three clovers. A lion-like striped leopard elevated behind the shield and two other projecting from the frame. In 1459 priest - guardian of Meerkene(?)
  7. Dieric, same shield with the addition of a rose in the heart.
  8. Note: Have a number of others as well.

It must also be noted that the author J. Th. De Raadt suggests that one should check on another individual of the era, Gilles van den Poele, to provide some history of the times. Gilles van den Poele, a knight, in concert with Wolfard van Borssele and many others, combined forces with the Count of Flanders on 1 august 1292, against the Count of Holland, their ruler who had broken an oath ["qui a failli a ses serments"].

BLAZON: Diericx: Flanders (Chevaliers [Knights], 16 sep 1765; "rec. dudit titre, 27 feb 1828" which I think states that the head Diericx of this Flanders clan was knighted on 16 sep 1765, and something was recorded 27 feb 1828, such as his nobility, honor or his office. "D'azur au chevron d'or, accompagne de trois hures de sanglier d'argent, lampasse de geueles defendues du champ. Casque couronne. BLAZON: Dierix von Brugk und Rotenberg, Silesie: (maison eteinte le 13 fevrier 1667). [Kevin's Notes: I believe "maison eteinte" means that this family died out or maybe the office or honor died out????.] Ecartele: aux 1 et 4 de gueules au lion d'argent; aux 2 et 3 de sable a un arbre d'or." In English: Quarters: at positions 1 and 4, gules with a white or silver lion; at positions 2 and 3, a sable background with a gold tree.

This electronic Finding Aid at Continental European Family History Association (CEFHA) is © copyright 2000 by John Movius, Webmaster of CEFHA site.
On that site John writes: "The General Index zu den Siebmacher'schen Wappenbüchern 1605-1957 (GISW) is known to be an excellent index - perhaps the very best index - to the large multi-volume set of Siebmacher's works concerning what is now Germany, plus Austria, Switzerland and much of Eastern Europe. It contains 586 pages and an estimated 10,000 surnames with wappens recorded by Siebmacher. It includes parts of Siebmacher volumes 3, 15 and 31 that were omitted from the preceding index volume (published in 1967?)."

In the Index we find the following surnames cataloged that have wappens in the full Siebmacher set:
