HOOFDCIJNSBOEKEN VAN HET LAND VAN WAAS--Tafels/Indices for "D"

LAST REVISED: September 1, 2003

"Hoofdcijnsboeken Van Het Land Van Waas", by A. Van Geertsom & G. Roggeman (1967). The index to these books is "Indices op de Hoofdcijnsboeken Van Het Land Van Waas", by C. Capelle. Deel IX Van de Reeks. 1972. The entries below are to the Duerinck and variant surname entries in the index to the Hoofdcijnsboeken Van Het Land Van Waas. Thank you to Etienne Dierick for providing these.

Definition of hoofdcijnsboeken: Thank you also to Jos Smits who explained what the hoofdcijnsboeken are. In his own words: "They are lists of descendants along the female line of people who wanted to prove their free-people-status (contrary to dependent people who could not go free away from their lordship--kind of slaves). To the church who guaranteed their free status, the people paid a yearly contribution. The receivers of this contribution were not interested in dates, they just were interested in finding out where these people lived so they could collect the yearly tax. So you will find very few indications of dates in the lists."

Volunteers needed (Kevin bought the CD Aug 2003): The original hoofdcijnsboeken did not have any dates, so you do not know what time period you are researching. The CD based on the hoofdcijnsboeken has some dates for approximately 5,000 out of a total of 135,000 entries. I need volunteers to tell me the dates these people lived (if they find relatives in the hoofdcijns CD records that I will place on the web and link to from this page).

Hoofdcijnsboeken tips from Jos Smits: The Roman numbers give the generation according to the Hoofdcijnsboeken. The genealogy of a certain surname may end with a husband and wife. Maybe there were descendants but in the late 18th century people were not so much interested any more in proving their freedom. It was generally accepted that there were no slaves any more in Belgium. The numbers between brackets refer to additions made at that time (1967) by the late Reverend Father Alois Maris, included in the printed books. As you can see the information in the Hoofdcijnsboeken is hardly more than what is on the CD (although the CD has some added dates from parish records). The main difference is the way of presenting the information: in the Hoofdcijnsboeken you have long lists of female descendance, the CD regroups this information along family-names.
The book may be available in the Stadsarchief of St. Niklaas and is available in the library of the Koninklijke Oudheidkundige Kring van Waas (Zamanstraat St.-Niklaas). The book is also found in the Rijksarchieven van Beveren en Gent. The Hoofdcijnsboeken of St.-Baafs (Gent) were published earlier in the "Annalen van de Oudheidkundige Kring van Waas" (St.-Niklaas), with no index available.

CD Hoofdcijns tips from Jos: The CD is a klapper (index), but a more intelligent one than the one in the printed books. The families are alphabetically grouped per parish where they paid the hoofdcijns (two files A-M and N-Z being the parish names) (this is not indicated on the CD). Each family has a file number and the indication to which cijnsboek it belongs. The name of the father and the mother, with a hyperlink to the place where the family of that mother can be found.
