KEVIN DUERINCK GENEALOGY

HULST, NETHERLANDS

Last revised: July 7, 2003

Photos of my June 2003 trip to Hulst, Kloosterzande, Terneuzen, Netherlands.

The Duerinck and Van der Meer boys are at it again--in Hulst, NL! Left to right: Kevin Duerinck, Kees Van der Meer and brother Wim, Jacques Duerinck, Jacques Van der Meer and brother Douwe, and John Duerinck.

Douwe Van der Meer, of the Kloosterzande/Hulst Duerinck family. His store in Terneuzen, NL. Lovely clothes, ladies!

This is the store of Petrus Gisbertus Duerinck, located at what we thought was 2605 South 111th Street, Chicago, Illinois USA. However, that is not possible because 111th Street is an east-west street. So it was 2605 West 111th Street. That would be 26 blocks west of State Street (a north-south street). Some data we found suggested that area was then called Roseland, Illinois, which is further evidenced by the existence of a Roseland Community Hospital at about 111th Street, between Halsted and Wentworth. The Pullman railroad cars had a big manufacturing plant nearby. Lake Calumet is just to the east. In the 1910 federal census, Peter Gisbertus Duerinck, his wife Mary Ph. Duerinck, and son Peter J.J. Duerinck lived at 34 East 111th Street, Chicago, Illinois. It states that he was a saloon keeper. [There was also a family home somewhere near 10924 South Michigan Avenue in Chicago (intersection would be 109th Street)]. Have not found the family in the 1920 federal census. Only Peter J.J. Duerinck was found in the 1930 census, owning his own home at 11322 South State Street, Chicago, Illinois.

Chicago street address tip: Chicago streets generally follow a grid pattern, running north-south or east-west. The center point is at State and Madison streets in the downtown Loop. East and west street numbers increase as you move away from State Street; north and south street numbers increase as you move away from Madison Street. Each block is represented by a hundred number.

Another Duerinck family (my grandpa Aloys Duerinck and wife Thais) from Belgium had a grocery store named "Gables Delicatessen" at 8009 31st Street, Riverside, Illinois (the post office was Riverside, but the store was actually in North Riverside, Illinois). This store was in operation from the 1920's through the 1950's--see next picture. The question everyone is asking--did the 2 Duerinck families know each other? My dad Lou does not remember talk of another Duerinck store in the Chicago area.
